Why convert a GIF to MP4 or WebP?

GIF is an old format limited to 256 colors with inefficient compression, so files get huge fast. The same animation as MP4 or animated WebP is usually 5–10x smaller with better color, which is why most platforms convert GIFs behind the scenes anyway.

How do I make a GIF smaller?

Use Compress GIF to shrink the file while keeping it a GIF; it reduces colors, resolution or frame rate to hit a smaller size. If the destination accepts video, converting to MP4 with GIF to MP4 gives a far bigger size reduction.
