It depends on the source. Large PNG screenshots and photos straight off a camera often shrink by well over half, because everything is re-encoded as JPEG at 70% quality. A JPG that was already heavily compressed may only shed a little, and can occasionally come out larger, in which case keep your original.
The compressor always outputs JPEG, since that's what gets photographic images smallest. Transparent areas are flattened onto a white background, because JPEG has no transparency. If you need to keep the alpha channel, use the PNG to WebP tool instead, since WebP compresses well and preserves transparency.
Not currently. Quality is fixed at 70%, a setting that cuts file size sharply while keeping photos looking clean at normal viewing sizes. Fine detail such as small text in screenshots can soften slightly, so check the result before deleting your originals.
No. Compression runs on your device, so your images stay with you unless you email the result or save it to My Files. That also means there's no fixed file-size cap; the practical limit is your device's memory.
