Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep transparency like PNG?

Yes. Unlike JPG, WebP supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas in your PNG carry over unchanged. This conversion doesn't flatten anything to a solid background.

How much smaller will the file be?

It varies by image, but WebP typically produces noticeably smaller files than PNG at similar visual quality, especially for photos and images with lots of color detail. Simple graphics with large flat-color areas may shrink less dramatically.

Will everything open a .webp file?

Every modern browser and most current image viewers and editors support WebP. If you need to share with an older app that doesn't recognize the format, convert back to PNG or JPG afterward.

Do my images get uploaded?

No. The whole conversion runs on your device, so your PNGs stay with you unless you email the result or save it to My Files.
