Why PNG instead of JPG for HEIC photos?

PNG is lossless, so no additional detail is discarded beyond what the original HEIC already contains, a good match if you plan to edit the photo further or need a transparent background. If you mainly want a smaller file for sharing and don't need transparency, HEIC to JPG usually produces a more compact result.

Will the file be larger than the original HEIC?

Does this work with Live Photos?

This tool converts the still HEIC image only. The motion portion of a Live Photo, stored separately as a short video, isn't included in the output PNG, which is always a single static image.
