IRS Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, is the form you file to correct a Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR that has already been submitted. It lets you fix errors in income, deductions, credits, or filing status, claim items you missed, or respond to changes after the original deadline. The form shows your original figures, the net change, and the corrected amounts side by side.
You can complete Form 1040-X in the Universal PDF editor, typing directly into each column and the explanation section, then download the finished PDF to print and mail or to keep alongside an electronically filed amendment. Working in the editor makes it easy to keep a clean, legible copy of exactly what you changed.
What is Form 1040-X used for
Form 1040-X corrects a previously filed individual income tax return. Common reasons include a late-arriving W-2 or 1099, a missed deduction or credit, an incorrect filing status, or dependents that were left off the original return. It can also be used to make certain elections after the deadline, to change amounts the IRS adjusted, or to claim a carryback due to a loss or unused credit.
You do not need to amend for simple math errors, which the IRS corrects automatically, or for a forgotten attachment, which the IRS will request by mail if it is needed.
How to fill out Form 1040-X
The core of the form is a three-column layout: Column A shows the amounts from your original return, Column C shows the corrected amounts, and Column B shows the difference between them.
- Enter the tax year you are amending at the top of the form; a separate 1040-X is required for each year
- Fill in your name, Social Security number, and current address, plus your spouse's information on a joint return
- Complete Columns A, B, and C for every line that changes, covering income, deductions, tax, credits, and payments
- Use Part II (Part III on some revisions) to explain each change in plain language and reference any forms or schedules you are attaching
- Attach any new or corrected forms and schedules that support the change, such as a corrected W-2 or a revised Schedule A
- Sign and date the form; both spouses must sign a joint amended return
Where to send it and deadlines
To claim a refund, Form 1040-X generally must be filed within three years after the date you filed the original return or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Special rules can extend this window in some situations, so check the instructions for your case.
Form 1040-X can be filed electronically through tax software for the current and two prior tax periods; older years must be mailed on paper. Paper filing addresses depend on where you live and are listed in the instructions on IRS.gov.
Frequently asked questions
Amended returns take considerably longer than original returns, often several months. You can follow the status with the IRS Where's My Amended Return tool, which typically shows activity a few weeks after you file.
Yes, for the current tax year and the two prior years, through tax software that supports amended returns. Earlier years must be filed on paper by mail.
Usually not. The IRS corrects arithmetic errors during processing and will contact you if a missing form or schedule is needed. File 1040-X when the substance of the return changes, such as income, deductions, credits, or filing status.
You can amend multiple years, but each tax year needs its own Form 1040-X. If mailing, the IRS recommends sending each year in a separate envelope.
Often yes. If a federal change affects your state taxable income, most states require an amended state return as well. Check your state tax agency's rules or ask a tax professional.
Pay as soon as you can to limit interest, which accrues from the original due date. You can pay electronically on IRS.gov or include payment when you mail the form.
