Form TD1NU, the Nunavut Personal Tax Credits Return, sets the territorial half of payroll tax deductions for anyone employed or drawing a pension in Nunavut. The federal TD1 takes care of federal withholding, and the TD1NU is completed in addition to it, declaring the Nunavut credits you expect to claim for the year.
You can complete the current year's TD1NU in the Universal PDF editor from anywhere with a connection, a convenience when your workplace is in Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, or a remote camp. Type in your amounts, sign, and download the finished PDF for your employer.
What is Form TD1NU used for
Nunavut administers its own personal income tax with territorial credit amounts, and the TD1NU converts your expected claims into the total claim amount your payer needs for the territorial deduction tables. Nunavut's personal tax rates sit among the lowest in Canada, so the territorial deduction is often a modest slice of the total withheld.
The whole territory lies within a prescribed northern zone, but the associated northern residents deductions are federal. They are handled through the federal TD1 and your annual return, while the TD1NU sticks to Nunavut's own credits.
Who fills out Form TD1NU
The form is for new employees whose territory of employment is Nunavut, new pension recipients resident there, workers whose credit entitlements have changed during the year, and anyone who wants a fixed extra amount of tax withheld from each pay.
You can skip filing one if the basic personal amount is your only claim and your situation is unchanged; employers apply that amount automatically when no form is on file.

When to give it to your employer or payer
Pass the completed TD1NU to your employer or pension payer with your federal TD1 when payments begin. Report changes in your entitlements on a fresh form within seven days; the CRA never receives the document directly.
If you work for more than one Nunavut employer at once, claim the territorial amounts with only one of them and enter zero with the multiple employer box checked on the rest.
