Form TD1NT, the Northwest Territories Personal Tax Credits Return, is the territorial equivalent of the provincial TD1 forms: it tells an employer or pension payer in the NWT how much territorial income tax to deduct from each payment. You complete it in addition to the federal TD1, since territorial and federal deductions are calculated separately with different credit amounts.
The current year's TD1NT can be completed start to finish in the Universal PDF editor. Fill the fields on screen, sign electronically, and download the completed PDF for your employer, whether that is a Yellowknife office or a remote site operator.
What is Form TD1NT used for
The Northwest Territories levies its own personal income tax, and the TD1NT captures the territorial credits you expect to claim so your payer can set withholding correctly. The territory's basic personal amount is comparatively generous, which helps offset northern living costs through lighter payroll deductions.
Keep in mind that the substantial northern residents deductions for people living in prescribed zones are federal, claimed through the federal TD1 and your annual return rather than on the TD1NT. The territorial form deals strictly with NWT credits.
Who fills out Form TD1NT
New employees whose province or territory of employment is the Northwest Territories complete the TD1NT, as do new pension recipients living in the territory, anyone whose entitlements change mid-year, and anyone asking for additional tax to be withheld. Fly-in fly-out workers should verify their territory of employment with payroll, because that determines whether the TD1NT or another jurisdiction's form governs their wages.
If your only claim is the basic personal amount and nothing has changed, your employer can apply the default without a new form.
How to fill out Form TD1NT
Take the current year's version, since the amounts are indexed annually, and work down the page:
- Line 1: the Northwest Territories basic personal amount shown on the current year's form.
- Line 2: the age amount if you will be 65 or older at year end, subject to the income threshold on the form.
- Line 3: the pension income amount for eligible pension or annuity income.
- Line 4: tuition amounts for eligible enrolment during the year, per the form's calculation.
- Line 5: the disability amount if you are eligible for the disability tax credit.
- Lines 6 and 7: the spouse or common-law partner amount and the amount for an eligible dependant, income-tested as described.
- Line 8: the caregiver amount for an infirm dependant age 18 or older.
- Lines 9 and 10: amounts transferred from your spouse or common-law partner or from a dependant.
- Total line: add everything, sign, and date. Page 2 offers the multiple employer checkbox, the exemption for income below the total claim, and the field for extra withholding.
When to give it to your employer or payer
Submit the TD1NT to your employer or pension payer alongside the federal TD1 when you start, and file an updated copy within seven days of any change in your entitlements. It remains in the payer's records rather than going to the CRA.
Concurrent jobs in the territory follow the standard rule: claim your amounts on one form, and mark the other with the more than one employer box and a zero total claim.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The federal TD1 directs federal withholding and the TD1NT directs the Northwest Territories portion. New hires in the territory are normally asked for both together.
No. That deduction is federal. The federal TD1 includes a line for the prescribed zone deduction, and the full claim is made on your annual income tax return.
For employment income, the form follows your territory of employment, so the TD1NT would typically apply to those wages. Confirm with your payroll department, since employer establishment rules decide the answer.
Your employer deducts territorial tax using only the basic personal amount. Additional credits you qualify for are then only recovered when you file your return.
The CRA issues a new version each year with indexed amounts. You only need to complete one when you start, when your entitlements change, or when your payer requests it.
