Employees and pensioners in Manitoba use Form TD1MB, the Manitoba Personal Tax Credits Return, to tell their employer or payer which provincial credits to factor into payroll deductions. It works hand in hand with the federal TD1: the federal form governs federal withholding, the TD1MB governs the Manitoba portion, and a new hire in Winnipeg or Brandon typically completes both on the same day.
With Universal PDF you can fill in the current year's TD1MB without touching a printer. Enter your amounts in the editor, sign electronically, and download the completed form as a PDF for your payroll department.
What is Form TD1MB used for
Manitoba sets its own credit amounts, and the TD1MB translates your expected provincial claims into a total that your payer runs through the Manitoba payroll deduction tables. Claim accurately and your withholding tracks your real tax bill; claim too little and you hand the province an interest-fee loan until refund time.
Manitoba is one of the provinces that kept both tuition and education amounts on its form, so students can reduce provincial withholding for eligible study. The form also accommodates Manitoba's family tax benefit calculation, a provincial reduction based on your dependants that can further trim the tax deducted.
Who fills out Form TD1MB
You complete a TD1MB if Manitoba is your province of employment for a new job, if you start drawing a pension while resident in Manitoba, if your credit entitlements change mid-year, or if you would like extra tax taken off each payment. It is always submitted in addition to the federal TD1.
Workers claiming only the basic personal amount with no changes since their last form can skip filing a new one; the employer applies the Manitoba basic amount by default.
How to fill out Form TD1MB
Use the current year's version of the form, as Manitoba updates the printed amounts annually. The main lines are:
- Line 1: the Manitoba basic personal amount from the current year's form.
- Line 2: the age amount if you will be 65 or older on December 31, reduced once your income passes the threshold on the form.
- Line 3: the pension income amount for eligible pension or annuity income.
- Line 4: tuition and education amounts if you are studying at an eligible institution, using the calculation described on the form.
- Line 5: the disability amount for those eligible for the disability tax credit.
- Lines 6 and 7: the spouse or common-law partner amount and the amount for an eligible dependant, each adjusted for the dependant's income.
- Line 8: the caregiver amount for an infirm dependant age 18 or older who lives with you.
- Lines 9 and 10: amounts transferred from your spouse or common-law partner or from a dependant.
- Final line: the total claim amount, then sign and date. Review page 2 for the family tax benefit section and the standard checkboxes for multiple employers, low income, and additional tax.
When to give it to your employer or payer
The completed TD1MB belongs with your employer or pension payer, filed alongside your federal TD1 when you start and replaced within seven days of any change to your entitlements. It is never sent to the CRA.
If you work two Manitoba jobs simultaneously, claim your provincial amounts through only one of them; on the other form, check the multiple employer box and record zero as your total claim.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The TD1MB only covers Manitoba provincial tax. Employers in Manitoba collect both forms from new employees so federal and provincial deductions are each set correctly.
Yes. Manitoba retained tuition and education amounts on its provincial form, so eligible students can claim them on the TD1MB and claim tuition separately on the federal TD1.
It is a provincial calculation based on personal amounts for you and your dependants that can reduce the Manitoba tax deducted from your pay. The form walks through the calculation; enter the result where indicated rather than guessing.
To your employer or pension payer only. They keep it on file as the instruction for your Manitoba payroll deductions; the CRA does not receive a copy.
Payroll defaults to the Manitoba basic personal amount. Any additional credits you were entitled to are not reflected in your withholding, so you would recover the difference when you file your return.
