EPUB vs PDF: Which Format Should You Use for Ebooks?

Use EPUB for anything you'll read on a phone, tablet or e-reader, because its text reflows to fit any screen. Use PDF when the layout itself matters: textbooks with diagrams, comics, forms, and anything headed for a printer. If you have the wrong format, both directions are convertible, with one honest caveat about which direction converts better.
What's the actual difference between EPUB and PDF?
EPUB is reflowable.Under the hood it's essentially a zipped website: text and images that the reading app lays out live, to fit your screen and your settings. Make the font bigger and the text re-wraps; switch from a 6-inch e-reader to a phone and every "page" re-paginates. The book has no fixed pages at all.
PDF is fixed-layout.It records exactly where every character and image sits on a page of a specific size, like a digital printout. That's its superpower (a PDF looks identical on every device and every printer) and its curse: on a small screen you don't get bigger text, you get zooming and panning around an A4 page.

The pattern: dedicated reading devices and apps favor EPUB; general-purpose computing and printing favor PDF.
When should you choose EPUB?
- Novels and text-first nonfiction. Reflow, adjustable fonts, night mode, and accurate progress tracking all depend on it.
- Reading on a phone or e-reader. A PDF sized for A4 or US Letter is genuinely unpleasant on a 6-inch screen.
- Accessibility. Reflowable text works far better with screen readers and large-print settings.
- Publishing an ebook. Stores and reading platforms are built around EPUB.
When should you choose PDF?
- Layout-critical content.Textbooks with numbered figures, technical manuals, sheet music, comics and manga: anywhere "see diagram on page 47" must keep meaning something.
- Printing.PDFs print exactly as designed; EPUBs don't really print at all.
- Documents needing signatures, forms or fixed pagination. Think contracts, applications, official records.
- Maximum compatibility with zero setup. Every computer made this century opens a PDF.

How do I convert PDF to EPUB?

Honest caveat: this is the harder direction. The converter has to infer flowing paragraphs from fixed page positions. Text-first PDFs (a novel, an essay collection) convert nicely. Multi-column layouts, heavy tables, footnotes and diagram-dense pages can come out with awkward breaks; for those, the PDF may simply be the better reading copy. And scanned PDFs need OCR first, since a scan contains no extractable text at all.
What about MOBI, AZW3 and other ebook formats?
EPUB and PDF are the two formats worth standardizing on, but older libraries are full of others. MOBI and AZW3are Amazon's legacy Kindle formats: both reflowable like EPUB, both effectively retired now that Send to Kindle accepts EPUB directly. CBR/CBZ are comic-book archives, fixed-layout image sequences that map naturally onto PDF. Do EPUB and PDF differ in file size?
For the same text-first book, usually not by much. Both compress text well, and the bulk of any ebook's size is its images either way. Converting EPUB to PDF can grow the file somewhat, because the converter embeds fonts and fixes each page's layout. If the resulting PDF is too large to email, run it through Compress PDF.
What about DRM-protected books?
We don't convert DRM-protected files, in either direction. Books bought from the Kindle store, Apple Books, or borrowed through library apps like Libby are usually locked with DRM, and our converters can't open them; the conversion will simply fail. This applies to every legitimate converter, not just ours. DRM-free ebooks (from stores like Standard Ebooks, Project Gutenberg, or publishers that sell DRM-free) convert without issues.
