Frequently asked questions

Does this keep any formatting, like paragraphs or tables?

It preserves line and paragraph breaks reasonably well, but tables, columns, and other visual layout are flattened into plain sequential text since .txt has no formatting of its own. For a result that keeps layout, use PDF to Word instead.

Do I need an account or a subscription?

Universal PDF requires a Pro subscription. One subscription unlocks every tool on the site, cancel anytime. The extraction itself runs on your device.

Why did I get an error saying no text was found?

That means your PDF has no selectable text layer, usually because it's a scan or a photo of a page saved as PDF. Run it through the OCR PDF tool first to recognize the text, then extract text from the result.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Text extraction happens on your device using the PDF's own text layer, so your file stays with you unless you choose to email the result or save it to My Files.
