What is Form I-90 used for

Form I-90 covers renewal and replacement of the Permanent Resident Card for people who already have permanent resident status. Common reasons include a card that has expired or will expire soon, a lost or stolen card, a damaged card, a legal name change, incorrect information on the card, or a card from an old series that needs updating.

One important exception: conditional residents whose two-year card is expiring do not use Form I-90 to remove conditions. Marriage-based conditional residents file Form I-751, and investor conditional residents file Form I-829.

Who files Form I-90

Lawful permanent residents, and permanent residents in commuter status, file Form I-90 for their own cards. Typical situations include:

• Renewing a 10-year green card that has expired or expires within the next six months.
• Replacing a card that was lost, stolen, destroyed, or damaged.
• Updating a card after a legal name change or correcting card errors.
• Replacing an old edition card, such as one without an expiration date.

How to fill out Form I-90

The form is straightforward, but USCIS specifically rejects applications missing the basics.

• Part 1 collects your information. USCIS will reject the form if your family name, mailing address, or date of birth is missing.
• Enter your Alien Registration Number and USCIS online account number if you have one.
• Part 2 asks your application type: why you need a new card. Pick the reason that matches your situation, since the required evidence follows from it.
• Attach the evidence the instructions list for your reason, such as a copy of the current card, a police report for a stolen card, or the court order for a name change.
• Sign the form. USCIS rejects any unsigned application.

Filing tips

You can file Form I-90 online through a USCIS account or by mail to the Phoenix lockbox. The current paper edition is dated 01/20/25. If you are close to citizenship eligibility, it may also be worth checking whether applying for naturalization makes sense, though you must still carry a valid card while any N-400 is pending.

• Applicants requesting a fee waiver cannot file online and must submit a paper application.
• Check the current filing fee with the USCIS fee calculator; the fee can differ depending on your reason for applying.
• Paper filings are scanned into the USCIS electronic system, and USCIS creates an online account for you to track the case.
• Clip Form G-1145 to the front of a paper filing if you want a text or email when the lockbox accepts it.
• If you move after filing, update your address with USCIS promptly so the new card is not mailed to an old address.
