IRS Form 2441, Child and Dependent Care Expenses, is used to claim the tax credit for amounts you paid someone to care for a child or other qualifying person so that you, and your spouse if filing jointly, could work or look for work. It also reports employer-provided dependent care benefits shown on your Form W-2.
You can complete Form 2441 in the Universal PDF editor, entering your care provider details and expense amounts directly into the form, then download the finished PDF. The form is filed with your Form 1040 or 1040-NR.
What is Form 2441 used for
Form 2441 calculates the child and dependent care credit, which offsets part of the cost of care that enables you to earn income. Qualifying care can include daycare, preschool, before- and after-school programs, and in-home care, depending on the rules in the instructions.
The form also handles dependent care benefits from an employer, such as a dependent care flexible spending account. Those benefits appear in box 10 of your W-2 and must be reconciled in Part III before any credit is figured.
Who needs to file Form 2441
File Form 2441 if you paid care expenses for a qualifying person so you could work or look for work and want to claim the credit. A qualifying person is generally your dependent child under age 13 when the care was provided, or a spouse or dependent who is physically or mentally incapable of self-care and lives with you more than half the year.
You, and your spouse on a joint return, generally must have earned income during the year, and the care provider cannot be your spouse, the child's parent, or your own dependent. Anyone who received employer dependent care benefits must file the form even if they claim no credit.
How to fill out Form 2441
Gather your care provider's information and your payment records first. Form W-10 is a handy way to request a provider's identification details.
- Part I: list each care provider's name, address, taxpayer identification number, and the amount you paid them during the year.
- Part II: list each qualifying person with their Social Security number and the expenses incurred for their care, then follow the lines to figure the credit based on your earned income and the applicable percentage.
- Part III: complete this section first if you received dependent care benefits from an employer, reconciling the amount in W-2 box 10 against your expenses to determine any taxable benefits and the expenses still eligible for the credit.
- Carry the credit to the appropriate line of Schedule 3, and note that expense limits apply per qualifying person; check the current amounts in the instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Generally a dependent child under age 13 when the care was provided, or a spouse or dependent incapable of self-care who lives with you more than half the year. The instructions cover special situations like divorced parents.
Yes. Form 2441 asks for each provider's name, address, and taxpayer identification number, and you can request the details with Form W-10. An exception applies for tax-exempt organizations, which can be noted on the form.
On a joint return, both spouses generally need earned income, though special rules treat a spouse who is a full-time student or incapable of self-care as having earned income.
Day camp costs can qualify when the care lets you work, but overnight camp does not. Publication 503 explains which expenses are eligible.
Amounts in box 10 of your W-2 must be reported in Part III of Form 2441, which determines whether any benefits are taxable and how much expense remains eligible for the credit. You must file the form even if no credit results.
For most tax years it is nonrefundable, meaning it can reduce your tax to zero but is not paid out beyond that. Check the current instructions, since the rules have varied by year.
