IRS Form 1098-T, the Tuition Statement, is an information return that eligible educational institutions issue for each enrolled student with reportable payments for qualified tuition and related expenses. Insurers that reimburse or refund qualified education expenses file it as well. The school files the form with the IRS and furnishes a copy to the student, so students receive this form rather than filling it out themselves.

The IRS PDF of the 1098-T is an informational copy. Schools and their service providers can use Universal PDF to prepare recipient copies and internal drafts, and students can view or annotate the statement they received while gathering documents for Form 8863 and their tax return. Note that Copy A, the red version, is only scannable on official printed stock, so self-printed copies of that page are not filed with the IRS.

What Form 1098-T reports

The form summarizes a student's transactions with the school for the calendar year. Box 1 shows total payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses, net of reimbursements and refunds that relate to those payments. Box 5 shows scholarships and grants administered and processed by the institution, which can reduce the education credit a student may claim.

Other boxes carry adjustments and status flags: Box 4 and Box 6 report adjustments to a prior year's tuition or scholarships, Box 7 indicates that Box 1 includes amounts for an academic period starting early in the following year, Box 8 marks at least half-time enrollment, Box 9 marks graduate-level enrollment, and Box 10 is used by insurers for reimbursements or refunds.

Who files it and who receives it

Eligible educational institutions, generally colleges, universities, and other schools that participate in federal student aid programs, must file a 1098-T for each student with reportable transactions and furnish a copy to that student. The institution reports the student's full taxpayer identification number to the IRS, while the student's copy may show only the last four digits for protection.

Students do not send this form anywhere. The statement supports a claim for an education credit on the student's or parent's return, and the IRS instructions direct questions about credit eligibility to Publication 970 and the Form 8863 instructions rather than to the school.

How the form is completed

For school staff and service providers preparing statements, the flow of the form is:

  • Filer information: the institution's name, address, telephone number, and employer identification number.
  • Student information: the student's name, address, and taxpayer identification number, collected on Form W-9S when the school does not already have it.
  • Box 1: total payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses during the calendar year, less related refunds.
  • Boxes 4 through 6: prior-year adjustments to payments or to scholarships and grants.
  • Boxes 7 through 9: checkboxes for early academic periods, half-time status, and graduate enrollment.
  • Copy handling: Copy A goes to the IRS on official scannable stock or through electronic filing, and Copy B is furnished to the student.

How students use their copy

The 1098-T is the supporting record for the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit, claimed on Form 8863 with the student's or parent's Form 1040. The amounts on the form are a starting point, since eligible expenses and credit rules depend on the taxpayer's situation as described in IRS Publication 970.

Keep the statement with your tax records. If the taxpayer identification number is missing or wrong on your copy, contact the school, since the issuer is the only party that can correct and refile the form.

Frequently asked questions

No. Your school prepares and files it, and you receive a copy. You use the information on it, together with your own payment records, when working on education credits with Form 8863.
