Form 1229, Consent to grant an Australian visa to a child under the age of 18 years, is the Department of Home Affairs form a non-accompanying parent or person with parental responsibility signs to give permission for a child to be granted an Australian visa. It applies whether the child is travelling to Australia temporarily or migrating permanently.
The form has two parts: Part A records the details of each child covered by the consent, and Part B records the details and declarations of the parents or guardians giving it. The current version carries a design date of 11/23, so check the Home Affairs forms listing for the latest edition before you start. You can complete the fields on this page, then print and sign the form, since the consent requires handwritten signatures.
Who needs to sign Form 1229
When a child under 18 applies for an Australian visa and a parent is not travelling with them, that non-accompanying parent, or anyone else who can lawfully decide where the child lives, may be asked to sign this consent. If one parent or guardian has lawfully been made solely responsible for decisions about where the child lives, only that person needs to sign, along with evidence of the arrangement.
The form is not used for Resident Return visa, Electronic Travel Authority or eVisitor applicants under 18. It is commonly requested alongside Child visa applications, where form 47CH and the sponsorship form 40CH refer to it as one way of meeting the parental responsibility requirement.
How to fill out Form 1229
Complete the form in English, either by typing into the fields or by printing it and writing in block letters. Part A has space for up to four children; if you need more, attach the additional details on a separate sheet.
- Part A: each child's family name, given names, date of birth, country of passport and passport number, exactly as shown in the passport.
- Transaction Reference Number: quote the TRN if the consent relates to an electronic visa application lodged through ImmiAccount.
- Part B: name, address, telephone and identity document number for each parent or person with parental responsibility, plus their relationship to the child.
- Purpose of travel: tick whether the consent covers a temporary visit, permanent residence or both.
- Declaration: each signing parent or guardian dates and signs the warning declaration confirming the information is complete and correct.
Documents to attach
The consent is only effective if Home Affairs can verify who signed it, so certified copies of supporting documents must travel with the form.
- A certified copy of each child's birth certificate, unless it is already lodged with the visa application.
- A certified copy of the personal details page of the signing parent's passport, driver licence, national identity card or birth certificate. At least one identity document must show the parent's signature.
- If one person is solely responsible for the child, certified copies of the legal documents, travel orders or court orders that establish this.
Where to send the completed form
Send the signed form and attachments to the office where the visa application was lodged, or upload them through ImmiAccount if the application was made electronically. Home Affairs strongly advises keeping a copy of the completed consent for your records.
