Form 1022, Notification of changes in circumstances, is how you tell the Department of Home Affairs that something has changed since you lodged your visa application. Section 104 of the Migration Act 1958 requires you to inform the Department of any change in your circumstances that affects an answer you gave on your application form, so this is a legal obligation rather than a courtesy.
Typical triggers include a new address, a new passport, a change in relationship status, or a child being born. The form is short, but ignoring the obligation is risky: a visa can be liable for cancellation if changes are not notified. When Form 1022 is required
Use Form 1022 when a change in your circumstances makes any answer on your visa application form out of date. The obligation applies while your application is being decided, and the form's instructions explain the cut-off: you do not need to notify changes that occur after your visa is granted if you applied in Australia, or after you are immigration cleared if you applied outside Australia.
Form 1022 is for genuine changes, not corrections. If you realise you gave the Department incorrect information, use Form 1023, Notification of incorrect answers, instead. Using the right form matters because the two situations are treated differently under the Act.
Who completes it
The visa applicant whose circumstances have changed completes and signs the form. If the change affects other people included in the application, the form collects details of those other applicants as well, so one notification can cover the family unit where appropriate.
- Complete the form in English, typed into the PDF fields or printed and written in block letters.
- Answer all questions on the form, not just the ones about the change.
- Include your Department client number or file number if you know it, so the notification is matched to your case quickly.
How to fill out Form 1022
The form starts with your identity details as they appear on your application, then asks what has changed. Describe the change precisely: state which answers on your application form are affected, what the new circumstances are, and the date the change took effect.
- Your details: full name, date and place of birth, relationship status, passport details and any national identity number.
- Contact details: current residential address, address for correspondence and telephone numbers.
- Electronic communication: whether you agree to the Department contacting you by email or other electronic means.
- Details of other applicants affected by the change, if any.
- The changes themselves: what has changed, which answers are affected and when the change occurred.
- Declaration: sign and date the form before lodging it.
How to lodge Form 1022
Return the completed form to the office where you lodged your application. For other matters, such as a proposed visa cancellation, send it to the office of the Department responsible for that matter, and if you are unsure which office that is, the form can be submitted to the nearest office of the Department. Keep a copy of the completed form. Home Affairs forms are version dated, so confirm on the official website that you are using the current version of Form 1022 before lodging it.

Any change that affects an answer on your application form, for example moving house, getting a new passport, marriage, separation, a new job where employment was part of your application, or the birth of a child.
Under section 104 you do not need to notify changes that occur after grant if you applied in Australia, or after immigration clearance if you applied outside Australia. Some visas carry separate conditions about keeping details current, so check the conditions on your grant notice.
Form 1022 is for circumstances that have genuinely changed since you applied. Form 1023 is for correcting information that was incorrect when you gave it. If an answer was wrong from the start, use Form 1023.
Failing to comply with section 104 can make a granted visa liable to cancellation, and for pending applications the missing information can affect the decision. Cancellation is not automatic, and you would normally get an opportunity to comment first if you are in Australia.
