Form 1023, Notification of incorrect answer(s), is the Department of Home Affairs form for telling the department that information you previously provided was wrong. The Migration Act 1958 requires you to correct incorrect answers given in a visa application, on a passenger card, or in response to a departmental notice about possible non-compliance, and this obligation continues even after a visa is granted.
The form is short but the stakes are real: failing to correct incorrect information can make a visa liable to cancellation. The current edition carries a design date of 03/18. Complete it carefully, answer every question, and keep a copy of the form and all attachments for your records.
When to use Form 1023
Use this form when something you told the department was incorrect at the time you provided it, for example a wrong date, a missed previous visa refusal, or an inaccurate employment history. It applies whether the error was accidental or deliberate.
If your details were correct when you gave them but have since changed, that is a change in circumstances, not an incorrect answer. In that case use form 1022, Notification of changes in circumstances, instead. Choosing the right form matters because the two notifications are treated differently under the Migration Act.
How to fill out Form 1023
Complete the form in English, typing into the fields or printing and writing in block letters. All questions must be answered.
- Questions 1 to 10: your personal details, including full name, date and place of birth, passport details, current residential address (a post office box is not accepted) and your departmental client or file number if known.
- Question 11: details of your partner and any dependants included in your application.
- Question 12: indicate where the incorrect information was given, on a visa application, a passenger card or a form 1022.
- Question 13: set out each piece of incorrect information and the correct details alongside it.
- Question 14: explain why the incorrect information was provided.
- Questions 15 to 16: your visa and application details if known, such as date granted, stay period and visa class.
- Question 17: sign and date the declaration, along with any other applicants aged 18 or over.
What happens after you lodge it
If you already hold a visa, the corrected information is taken into account in deciding whether you should continue to hold it. Cancellation is not automatic; if you are in Australia you will be given an opportunity to comment before any final decision. If your application is still being assessed, the corrected details become part of that assessment.
Because an incorrect answer can trigger cancellation consideration, it can be worth getting advice from a registered migration agent or legal practitioner before lodging the form if the error is significant. Frequently asked questions
Form 1023 corrects information that was wrong when you gave it. Form 1022 notifies the department that your circumstances have changed since you applied, so previously correct information is no longer current. Use 1022 for changes such as a new address, passport or relationship status.
Yes. The obligation to correct incorrect answers continues after grant. The department states that information provided on this form will be considered in deciding whether you should continue to hold the visa.
Not automatically. The form explains that if you are in Australia you will be given an opportunity to comment on any grounds for possible cancellation before a decision is made. Correcting the record voluntarily is generally viewed more favourably than the department discovering the error itself.
