When you start a job or a pension in New Brunswick, Form TD1NB, the New Brunswick Personal Tax Credits Return, is how your payer learns which provincial credits to build into your tax deductions. It sits alongside the federal TD1, which you complete at the same time; the federal form directs federal withholding and the TD1NB directs the New Brunswick share.

The Universal PDF editor lets you complete the current year's TD1NB in your browser. Enter the amounts, sign electronically, download the finished PDF, and send it to payroll without printing a thing.

What is Form TD1NB used for

New Brunswick applies its own credit amounts to provincial income tax, and the TD1NB records the claims you expect to make for the year. Your total claim amount steers the provincial withholding tables, so an accurate form keeps your paycheque deductions close to your true annual liability.

The provincial credit lineup mirrors the familiar pattern: basic personal amount, age amount, pension income, tuition, disability, spousal and dependant amounts, a caregiver amount for infirm adult dependants, and transfers from a spouse or dependant, all at the values printed on the current year's form.

Who fills out Form TD1NB

New employees whose province of employment is New Brunswick, new pension recipients living in the province, anyone whose entitlements have changed, and anyone requesting extra withholding should complete the form. Cross-border workers around the Quebec and Nova Scotia boundaries should remember that for employment income the form follows where they work, not where they sleep.

If you claim only the basic personal amount and nothing has changed, you can let your employer apply the default rather than filing a new TD1NB.

How to fill out Form TD1NB

Pick up the current year's version, since the province indexes the amounts annually. Then move down the page:

  • Line 1: the New Brunswick basic personal amount as shown on the current year's form.
  • Line 2: the age amount if you will be 65 or older on December 31, income-tested per the worksheet.
  • Line 3: the pension income amount for eligible pension or annuity income.
  • Line 4: tuition for eligible study during the year, calculated as the form directs.
  • Line 5: the disability amount if you are eligible for the disability tax credit.
  • Lines 6 and 7: the spouse or common-law partner amount and the amount for an eligible dependant, each reduced by the dependant's expected income.
  • Line 8: the caregiver amount for an infirm dependant age 18 or older.
  • Lines 9 and 10: amounts transferred from your spouse or common-law partner or from a dependant.
  • Last line: your total claim amount, followed by your signature and the date. Check page 2 for the multiple employer, low income, and additional tax options.

When to give it to your employer or payer

Deliver the completed TD1NB to your employer or pension payer, paired with the federal TD1, when payments start. When your entitlements change mid-year, the CRA expects a replacement form within seven days.

For overlapping jobs inside New Brunswick, credits go on one form only; the second employer's copy gets the more than one employer checkbox and a zero total claim.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, they cover different taxes. The federal TD1 sets federal deductions, while the TD1NB sets the New Brunswick provincial portion. Most New Brunswick employers ask new hires for both.
