Form TD1BC, the British Columbia Personal Tax Credits Return, tells your employer or pension payer which BC tax credits you expect to claim so the right amount of provincial income tax comes off each payment. Everyone who completes it also completes the federal TD1, because the TD1BC only governs the British Columbia portion of your deductions and is filled out in addition to the federal form.
The Universal PDF editor makes short work of it: open the current year's TD1BC, click into each field to enter your amounts, sign on screen, and download the completed PDF ready for your employer or payroll provider.
What is Form TD1BC used for
British Columbia levies its own personal income tax with provincially set credit amounts, and the TD1BC captures your expected claims for the year. The total flows into the payroll deduction tables your payer uses, directly shaping your take-home pay.
Unlike Ontario and Alberta, BC kept its provincial tuition credit, so students will find a tuition line on the TD1BC. The province also offers its own BC caregiver amount for infirm dependants age 18 or older.
Who fills out Form TD1BC
Complete a TD1BC when you start a job where your province of employment is British Columbia, when you begin receiving pension income as a BC resident, when your credit entitlements change, or when you want additional tax withheld at source. Remote workers should note that province of employment generally follows the employer's establishment where they report, which is worth confirming with payroll.
If the basic personal amount is all you plan to claim, a new form is optional; your employer will apply the BC basic amount automatically.
How to fill out Form TD1BC
Work from the current year's version of the form, since BC indexes its credit amounts each year. Line by line:
- Line 1: the BC basic personal amount shown on the current year's form.
- Line 2: the age amount if you will be 65 or older at year end, subject to the income limit on the form.
- Line 3: the pension income amount for eligible pension or annuity income.
- Line 4: tuition for full-time or part-time study at an eligible institution, where your fees exceed the minimum stated on the form.
- Line 5: the disability amount if you qualify for the disability tax credit.
- Lines 6 and 7: the spouse or common-law partner amount and the amount for an eligible dependant, each income-tested against the dependant's earnings.
- Line 8: the BC caregiver amount for an infirm dependant age 18 or older.
- Lines 9 and 10: amounts transferred from your spouse or common-law partner or from a dependant.
- Line 11: the total claim amount, then the signature block certifying the information is correct.
When to give it to your employer or payer
Give the signed TD1BC to your employer or payer at the start of employment or pension payments, together with the federal TD1. A change in your circumstances during the year, marriage, a new dependant, turning 65, enrolling in school, calls for a revised form within seven days.
With simultaneous employers, claim the BC amounts on one form only, and on the others check the more than one employer or payer box and enter zero for the total claim.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The federal TD1 controls federal deductions and the TD1BC controls the British Columbia portion. New hires in BC are normally asked to complete both at the same time.
Yes. British Columbia retained its provincial tuition credit, so eligible students enter tuition on line 4 of the TD1BC in addition to any federal claim on the TD1.
Claim every credit you are entitled to on the TD1BC and the federal TD1. For deductions the forms do not cover, such as RRSP contributions or support payments, you can ask the CRA to authorize reduced withholding by filing Form T1213.
Check the box on page 2 declaring that your total income will be less than your total claim amount, and your employer or payer will not deduct income tax. This is common for students and part-time workers.
No fixed expiry. It remains in effect until your situation changes, at which point the CRA expects an updated form within seven days of the change.
