Both run on the same conversion job. This page only accepts .docx files; Word to PDF also accepts the older .doc format. Pick whichever matches your file; the resulting PDF is the same either way.

Does formatting survive the conversion?

Fonts, headings, tables, and embedded images carry over in most documents. Complex layouts (tracked changes, unusual fonts our converter doesn't have, or heavily nested tables) can shift slightly and may need minor cleanup; simple text documents convert with very little change.
