Form I-864A, Contract Between Sponsor and Household Member, lets someone in the sponsor's household pledge their income or assets to help meet the financial requirements of Form I-864, Affidavit of Support. It is filed together with the I-864, never on its own.

You can complete Form I-864A in the Universal PDF editor and download the finished PDF to sign and submit with the sponsor's affidavit. Keeping the household member's income figures aligned with the numbers on the I-864 avoids avoidable Requests for Evidence.

What is Form I-864A used for

When a sponsor's individual income does not reach the required threshold, a household member can sign Form I-864A to make their income or assets count toward the total. The form is a legally binding contract between the sponsor and the household member.

Signing carries real consequences. If the sponsored immigrant receives means-tested public benefits, the paying agency can seek repayment from the sponsor and the household member, and can sue either of them for the cost of the benefits.

Who files Form I-864A

The household member who is contributing income or assets completes and signs the form together with the sponsor. Qualifying household members are defined in the I-864 instructions and generally include:

  • The sponsor's spouse or other relatives living at the same residence.
  • People the sponsor lists as dependents on their federal tax return, even if they live elsewhere.
  • The intending immigrant, but only when their income will continue from the same source after immigration and their spouse or children are immigrating with them.

How to fill out Form I-864A

The form mirrors the financial sections of the I-864, so complete the two documents side by side.

Because the contract is enforceable against the household member personally, anyone unsure about the obligation should speak with an immigration attorney or accredited representative before signing.

  • The household member provides their identifying information, relationship to the sponsor, and current employment.
  • Income entries should match the household member's most recent federal tax return, which must be attached as a copy or IRS transcript with related W-2s and 1099s.
  • List the intending immigrants the promise covers; the contract identifies the specific people being supported.
  • Both the sponsor and the household member sign. Missing either signature makes the contract ineffective.

Filing tips

File Form I-864A in the same package as Form I-864. The current edition is dated 10/17/24, matching the current I-864 edition.

  • Attach the household member's most recent federal tax return or transcript, and optionally the two prior years if they strengthen the case.
  • Include proof of the household member's residence with the sponsor and relationship to the sponsor when they are not listed as a dependent on the sponsor's tax return.
  • Type your answers or use black ink, and keep all pages from the same form edition.
  • A separate Form I-864A is needed for each household member whose income or assets are being counted.

Frequently asked questions

Generally a relative who lives with the sponsor, someone listed as a dependent on the sponsor's tax return, or in limited cases the intending immigrant themselves. The I-864 instructions define the full list.
