What is Form CIT 0302 used for

The form asks IRCC to release you from Canadian citizenship. If the application is approved, IRCC issues a certificate of renunciation, and from that point you are no longer a Canadian citizen, with everything that implies for your right to enter, live, and work in Canada.

Renunciation is designed to prevent statelessness, so IRCC will not approve an application unless you already hold, or will acquire, citizenship of another country.

Who files Form CIT 0302

You apply for yourself; renunciation is personal and cannot be filed for someone else in the ordinary process. The instruction guide sets out the eligibility criteria in force, which generally include the following.

• You are a Canadian citizen and at least 18 years old.
• You are, or will become, a citizen of another country if the renunciation is approved, so you would not be left stateless.

• Answer the declaration questions honestly and completely; misrepresentation has serious consequences.

Send the completed form with the documents on the checklist to the address in the instruction guide. Processing includes verification of your record, and IRCC may ask for an interview or further evidence.

• Check the current fee on the IRCC fee list before paying.
• Include clear copies of your identification and proof of your other citizenship.
• Keep a copy of the entire package, and store the certificate of renunciation safely if the application is approved.
• If you later want to become Canadian again, a separate resumption process exists with its own requirements, so do not assume renunciation can simply be undone.
