CRA Form T2202, Tuition and Enrolment Certificate, is the official certificate that designated educational institutions in Canada issue to students, showing the eligible tuition fees paid and the months of part-time and full-time enrolment for the year. Students use the amounts on the certificate to claim the tuition tax credit on their income tax return.

Educational institutions and administrators can prepare T2202 certificates in the Universal PDF editor, typing student, program, and fee details into the form and downloading finished PDFs for their records or for students. Students who need to review or annotate their certificate can also open it in the editor before working on their return.

What is Form T2202 used for

The certificate documents two things: the tuition fees eligible for the tuition tax credit, and the number of months the student was enrolled part time or full time. The tuition amount feeds the federal credit claimed through the student's return, and the enrolment months matter for other measures that depend on student status.

Institutions file T2202 information with the Canada Revenue Agency electronically and provide the certificate to students, typically through an online student portal. That means the CRA can match the tuition claimed on a return against what the institution reported.

Who issues and who uses Form T2202

Designated educational institutions, including universities, colleges, and certain certified institutions offering occupational skills courses, issue the certificate. Students do not fill out their own T2202; they receive it from each institution where they paid eligible tuition during the year.

Institutions are required to collect a student's social insurance number for the certificate, so students should make sure their school has it on file. Students enrolled at more than one institution receive a separate certificate from each.

How the T2202 is completed

For institutions preparing certificates, the form captures the following:

  • The institution's name and the school type, along with the program name the student was enrolled in.
  • The student's name, address, and social insurance number.
  • Session periods showing the start and end months of each eligible session in the year.
  • Eligible tuition fees for each session, which exclude items that do not qualify for the credit.
  • The number of part-time and full-time months of enrolment for each session.

Using the certificate at tax time

Students claim the tuition amount on their return using the schedule for tuition and education amounts, carry forward any portion they cannot use, or transfer an allowable amount to a spouse or common-law partner, parent, or grandparent within the limits set by the rules. The certificate itself is not mailed in with the return; keep it in case the CRA asks to see it, which it does routinely for tuition claims.

Frequently asked questions

No. The certificate is issued by the educational institution based on its enrolment and payment records. Students receive it, usually through the school's online portal, and use the amounts on their return.
